Social media trends you need to know about in 2024

The social media landscape is ever-changing and hard to navigate – just when you thought you’d cracked it, it changes!

For a business or organisation, it’s important to get social media right, which means making informed decisions about where to prioritise time, resources, and budget.

That’s why we’ve compiled this list of some of the social media trends you need to know about for 2024.

AI will continue to grow

Artificial Intelligence was one of 2023’s biggest topic of conversation, and it shows no sign of slowing down. 68% of large companies have adopted at least one AI technology, and more will be hopping on the bandwagon in 2024. Top of Form

AI can be a powerful time-saving tool for companies to implement within their social media strategy. Tasks like writing captions, ad targeting and social media monitoring will be increasingly delegated to AI systems. Some companies might even begin to use it to generate images and videos for posts, making it much quicker to create content. A rise in AI chatbots will also allow for 24-hour customer support.

While we recommend exploring the possibilities of AI, there are, of course, drawbacks that are important to remain aware of. Issues surrounding accuracy, bias, privacy, and copyright can all end up reducing your social media engagement. At the moment, it’s clear AI still requires human help.

Authenticity will be more important than ever

There’s nothing audiences love more in a brand than authenticity – they want to feel like they’re engaging with a real person online, not reading a polished advert. This means more proactive engagement on social media, more livestreaming, and more user-generated content.

Research shows that 92% of customers trust influencer marketing over more traditional advertising methods, and many business will be collaborating with ‘micro-influencers’ to facilitate a better relationship with their audience. If influencers aren’t your thing, team spotlights are also a great way to give your company a human feel. These posts can range from an employee’s work history and achievements to personal interests.

In short, every promotional post will need to appear natural and organic.

Short-form content will be king

Platforms like TikTok have revolutionised the demand for short-form content, and people are spending less and less time engaging with individual posts, preferring to flick through TikTok videos, Instagram reels and YouTube shorts. In fact, the average user opens the TikTok app eight times per day.

But why are short form videos so popular? They’re easily shared and easily digestible for a start, and quick to start conversations and raise awareness. Many are also spontaneous (or made to look that way), creating that all-important image of authenticity that audiences love.

If you want to be social media success in 2024, social media videos are definitely the way to go.

Audiences will expect a more social and sustainable approach

We’re seeing society as a whole make the move to become more eco-conscious in everyday practices, and that includes social media usage. As a result, audiences will be expecting companies to acknowledge and engage with the environmental and social issues they care about.

Tone of voice will also become increasingly important, and posts that fail to read the room will face reputational damage.
